Delegates from Japan range in age from 11 to 17 years. They are from elementary, middle, and high schools and come from all over Japan. Each delegate has taken many years of English classes in school and also supplementary English classes outside of school. Some students are learning other languages as well. However, as many of us can attest to, learning a language in a classroom setting is not the most effective. Many of these delegates can read and write English well, but to speak it and to have it spoken to them is not something they have mastered. This is one of the reasons they are coming to Utah. They wish to be immersed in our language so they can build the confidence to speak it themselves and to learn how it is spoken by a true English speaker.
Speaking of immersion, the delegates not only wish to be immersed in the English language, but also in the American way of life. Most delegates have only seen what American life is like in movies or on YouTube videos. They want to experience what everyday family life is like. And the delegates want to share their own culture with your family. This sharing of cultures and languages is the point of the whole homestay experience.
